Be Our Placement Student 2015

placement 2014

About us

Our expertise lays in the design and fit out of commercial, medical and education areas. We work in a busy environment and deal with different projects from initial consultation through to completion.

In the latest years, we've diversified into furniture design and have developed a comprehensive range of commercial products, which you can buy from this site. We specialise in high-end commercial furniture and provide bespoke, semi-bespoke and/or modular solutions according to our client requirements.

How We Work

We are a small team based in Havant, Hampshire.

We are a generally busy office and it can be intense at times. We support and help each other out, even though we are all very independent in our roles. We also seek to help develop each others strengths.

The right candidate will be working alongside our in-house Designer, who will provide support and mentoring when needed.

What we think about working at Ken Rand Partners

Mike Stringer (Industrial Design @ Bournemouth Uni) - Current Placement Student

Mike Stringer

"The amount of experience you gain from this placement is honestly invaluable. You have the opportunity to engage in so much. From design, marketing, costings, project management, making relationships with clients and suppliers and much much more. I love the variation of different projects; it enabled me to truly test my problem solving skills, strengthening me as a designer. The support you get here is incredible; you work with a very friendly team of people who are always there to help you.

In terms of design knowledge Ken and Camila are amazing. They are filled with so much information that they are just bursting to pass on to you. Working alongside Camila is a massive experience in itself, she is very patient, a great mentor and it’s great just to sit with her, see what she is working on, talk and overcome problems with projects. Since being here I have developed a really keen eye for graphics which she has been very supportive of. She's taught me so much regarding composition with presenting my ideas across which I believe has made my designs really come to life. Make sure you get as much information out of her, she is a really asset to you on your placement!"

Sophie Hambling (Industrial Design @ Bournemouth Uni) -  Placement Student 2013-2014

Sophie Hambling

"I love the amount of first hand contact. From receiving a call from a client, engaging in a new project, to working out design and materials with the suppliers. I organise everything from the site visit, to the installation of my projects. The responsibility is great but never overwhelming. My designs are so much more viable now.

The support and resources. This placement is whatever you make it. I have recently taken on the company blog, to keep me on my toes for what is happening in the market. Working with Camila is priceless, she is so patient and is so willing to share her knowledge. My Photoshop has come on leaps and bounds from the amount of tips and tricks she has taught me. The opportunity to work in SketchUp has led me to feel more confident within CAD. I get the chance to work with Camila on her projects and challenge her ideas. I'd like to think we complement each other quite well!"

We are looking for someone who...

...is self-motivated and eager to learn through training as well as learning for themselves

...is flexible and can assist with the general everyday running of our busy office

...can manage their own time and meet deadlines

 Daily Tasks

By the end of your placement you would have had a good overview of all aspects of the business that go towards making the design a reality. There are 3 key areas you would be involved with:

Our design service normally starts with a client telephone enquiry. Your job is to carefully listen to their needs, put together a proposal to fulfill their requirements and present your solution to the client.

* Dealing with client enquiries via telephone.

* Developing 3D visuals using Sketchup.

* Creating layout plans and elevations using TurboCAD.

* Creating visuals and client presentations using Photoshop.

* Designing 2D graphics in Illustrator or Photoshop.

* Talking to subcontractors and suppliers to assess the feasability of your design.

From time to time we also do:

*Visits to manufacturers so that you can see your designs come to life.

We like to keep in touch with our clients and also work hard on finding new ones. We design most of our marketing material in house and like to keep up-to-date with the latest online marketing trends.

The website is our main client interface. Therefore, it needs to be updated regularly.
