May Education Article - It’s a Small College, But It May be the Future of Higher Ed - and the Workplace Too?

The New York Times 4th May had a great story about how Dartmouth College is nearing completion of an initiative that will make the entire Hanover New Hampshire campus a wireless hotspot.

More significantly though, Dartmouth has also brought all its technology capabilities together in one wi-fi network – Internet access, cable television, and telephone service. Just imagine that – being able to watch television on your laptop, make a phone call, and download that lecture you missed – all at the same time.

The story quotes Brad Noblet, Dartmouth’s director of technical services as saying:
“This really improves our ability to deliver types of information services that enhance teaching and learning.”

More impressive is the vision of English Professor Thomas Luxon, who teaches a course on Shakespeare plays:
“Imagine writing a paper about one of these performances and including a video clip in your paper [from a video of the play], like you would a quote. Now your paper isn’t on paper anymore, it’s on a Web site or a word file.”

Now the next question is, what would a fully integrated workplace – or corporate office facility – be like if it were this integrated? How would that change the way people work, exchange ideas, learn, and store information?
