Shop Make-Over – Widcombe Health Foods
Our client, the proprietor of Widcombe Health Food Shop in Bath, approached us with plans to relocate his existing shop to larger premises on the same street. The clients’ objective was a complete shop make-over, creating maximum amount of retail space, with room for a number of fridges for fresh food storage, adequate back-of-house storage space for additional stock and a staff area including an office, kitchenette and toilet. It was very important to our client and his staff to comply with an organic theme using natural, recycled materials wherever possible. The new premises were a former mobile communications shop with an unusual layout and restricted ceiling height, which is not ideal for retail purposes. Our proposal for the shop make-over involved moving a toilet and kitchenette from the front of the shop to the rear to maximise the retail space. This created space in the front area of the premises for the majority of the stock and the retail counter, making it easy for customers to browse the merchandise. We designed bespoke display units in a natural wood finish with lit canopies for optimum product display. Wood effect melamine was used for shelves for maximum durability and economy, with real wood veneer to the unit side cheeks and solid oak timber edging. The bespoke curved counter was designed to be the showpiece of the shop and was clad in solid oak timber for maximum impact. A specially designed display solution was created for fresh, locally made bread to be sold from behind the counter. A window display bed allowed seasonal displays and fresh fruit and vegetables to be merchandised in order to attract passing foot traffic. To compliment the natural wood units and counter we used slate effect flooring and modern brushed steel light fittings. The overall shop make-over portrays a natural, organic and fresh image and meets all objectives on time and in budget.
